Internal/External Travelogues: Three by Brakhage
These three films are just a small sampling of the Film-Makers’ Coop’s vast Stan Brakhage collection. Many of the Coop’s Brakhage prints are rarely screened, and many aren’t available anywhere digitally. This screening series highlights the best of this underseen trove of Brakhage’s films.
Unconscious London Strata, finished in 1982, is an unconventional travelogue of time spent in London, and “an exploration into the depths of unconscious reactions.” Finished eight years later, City Streaming serves as a Toronto-based spiritual successor to Strata, dedicated to navigating the landscape of Brakhage’s dwelling in the city. The Lost Films is made up of nine short travelogues completed in the three years following City Streaming. In the first segment, Brakhage returns to London, and the final segment is a hand-painted work he described as “the color negative of ‘truth.’”
